STL file format

Greetings to all,
      I am just getting interested in RP and was wondering if someone could point me to a reference which 
describes STL input file format, since this seems to be a (the) prevalent format. What other format(s) are used? Are there any DXF-to-STL utilities available?  Thanks for your time,
