The site http://www.viewpoint.com has a number of freely available 3D
objects for various visualization packages. A lot of the objects are
available in Wavefront's .obj format, which is easily converted to STL
format. I have a perl script which will perform the conversion if
anyone is interested. This site also has a number of utilities for
converting to and from various visualization formats.

The 3D visualization sites are good sources for common objects, ie
planes, automobiles, animals, etc. Not all the object files will
convert to "GOOD" stl files since the visualization packages don't
always require facet to facet connectivity and water tight volumes. But
usually its nothing that a quick trip through 3Dverify can't fix.

Viewpoint data labs also sells 3D object files in a number
of different formats. They have a large catalog of objects available for
sale.
