Hi Folks,
There's been some chat here in the past months that has mentioned Viewpoint Datalabs, the folks that sell and license 3-D data. I had a meeting in their Los Angeles office last week and I am happy to report that they are very real and seem to be doing quite well. It is very interesting that their market is almost entirely in entertainment and nonindustrial, except for a little work for the military.
Now here is something that some people on this list might find interesting. In the back of their catalog of 3,000 geometries, they present an offer to people who have 3-D data that other people might find useful. They are interested in licensing and offering such works in their catalog, whereby they would pay a royalty each time it is sold. For 3-D design impressarios, this is definitely the 21st-century way to make a living. I'll bet half the people on this list have interesting data of this sort.
Here's my suggestion if you want to sell something to Viewpoint. Contact them (http://www.viewpoint.com) and get a copy of their catalog so you will get a flavor for the kinds of data they are already selling. (It is VERY diverse!) Then refer to the notice at the back of the catalog about selling models to them. Good luck.
