Dear RP'ers,
at the iwb in Augsburg we have build a tool for injection molding the gear-box
housing of a drilling machine. The geometrically complex core-slide of that toolwas laser-sintered out of metal using the SLS-process as well as the
EOS-process. Both parts were infiltrated and carefully (elaborate work!!)
finished and afterwards used in the actual injection molding process. We
produced a little series of 30-50 housings. Both core-slides are still usable!
The EOS-parts had better accuracy than their SLS-counterparts but their
mechanical properties were worse. This is mainly caused by the infiltration
material. EOS uses a kind of solder whereas DTM works with copper.
Although a lot of work still needs to be done, I was really amazed by the
general quality of the parts when I got them this spring. I hadn't expected EOS or DTM to be able to metal-sinter such a complex part at all.
For more details see our paper on this years Dearborn-conference "Fast
prototype tool" by Helmut Naber, Michael Macht and Axel Geuer.
Best regards ....
