I am responding to an inquiry about alternative materials for the LOM
machine. The University of Dayton Research Institute and Helisys are
partners on a project (funded by ARPA/ONR) in which ceramic matrix
composites are being fabricated from tape- cast ceramic tapes. We have
successfully used a LOM2030 machine to fabricate a few monolithic SiC and
AlN parts so far. We are presently expanding the envelope of monolithic
parts that we can make, and our next step is SiC/SiC composite parts. As
part of our program, Helisys is redesigning the LOM machine to accommodate
the fabrication of composites in which continuous fibers maintain their
continuity in curved layers (similar to a thermoforming process).
The University of Dayton Research Institute may also be working more closely
with Helisys on the development of rapid tooling for polymer composites.
Helisys has successfully fabricated tool-like articles using a prepreg of
ceramic fiber and B-staged epoxy resin. These articles demonstrated
excellent compressive properties.
For more information on ceramic materials from LOM, you will soon be able to
browse our home page at the address
          http://www.udri.udayton.edu/
and under the "Projects, Advanced Manufacturing" link. We'll have this link
ready within a few days.

Dear ALL,
Does anyone out there have any working experience, comments or seen any good
LOM plastic built parts or other building materials in development for LOM
machine ?
We are very interested in this development.
Thank you
Phoon
