2nd Phidias Workshop on Stereolithographic Modelling
- introducing Colour Stereolithography -

Friday February 16, 1996
at 13.30

This workshop is organised in the framework of the final assessment of the Phidias project. Case studies will be presented which demonstrate the use of medical models for different applications. Some of these case studies were performed within the Phidias project, others are presented by other advanced users of the technology.
The workshop is targeted to surgeons and radiologists and anyone who is interested in Medical applications of Rapid
Prototyping. The technical notes will clarify the technologies (Scanning, Stereolithography, Resins,...) and discuss new applications.
Colour stereolithography will be explained and illustrated through the discussion of the very first case studies. Colour
stereolithography offers a new dimension to medical modelling as different anatomical structures can be represented in one model.

Purpose :

In the preparation of complex surgery, three-dimensional models derived from CT scanning can be very helpful. As the ultimate tree-dimensional representation, solid models are mainly used for three purposes :

- Providing visual and tactile information for diagnosis, therapy planning and didactic purposes. The medical model facilitates communication between surgical team members and patients.
- Enabling accurate planning and simulation of interventions thus reducing theatre time. Life-size individual models are used to rehearse osteotomies, enabling to measure displacements in advance.
- Serving as a master or negative for prosthesis or implant production.

This workshop will give an overview of the state of the art both on medical applications and on technical developments.
