Prairie, MN) announced three new RP systems: 1) a small desktop 3D printer
called Genisys, 2) a new version of the company's benchtop machine called the
FDM 1650, and 3) a large system called the Stratasys 8000.
The new Genisys product is an office machine based on 3D printing technology
conceived at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center (Yorktown Heights, NY).
Genisys uses a cassette system that holds 52 wafers to feed thermoplastic
material through an extrusion head. The system produces models that fit inside
a build volume of 203 x 203 x 203 mm (8 x 8 x 8 inches). The machine measures
914w x 813h x 737d mm (36 x 32 x 29 inches), weighs 185 lbs, and is priced in
the $50,000 range.
The FDM 1650 is similar to the FDM 1600, but 3x faster, according to the
company. It sells in the $100,000 price range. The Stratasys 8000 offers a
build volume of 508 x 432 x 610 mm (20 x 17 x 24 inches) and offers a 6x speed
improvement over the FDM 1600. The 8000, available in the fourth quarter of
this year, will be priced in the $300,000 range.
