This month in the Rapid Prototyping Report -- September 1996

**Ever thought about exploring the surface of Venus? Or holding a
molecule, enlarged 20 million times in your hand? Scientists at the San
Diego Super Computer Center are doing just that, and more, with the help
of rapid prototyping. We talk with Dr. Mike Bailey, director of the
SDSC's Tele-Manufacturing Center and find out why virtual reality and
computer visualizations sometimes aren't good enough.

**Austin's Solid Freeform Fabrication Symposium is the place to go to
find out about cutting-edge research in rapid prototyping. This year's
symposium included more than 60 presentations ranging from "convection
in polymeric powder" to "the use of fabricators to reduce lunar
transportation costs." There were also no fewer than 13 presentations
about the the direct fabrication of metal parts.

**Technology enhancements -- Cubital says it has made both hardware and
software improvements that will increase the reliability and ease of use
of its Solider rapid prototyping equipment.

**Autofab in Japan -- A new report written by Marshall Burns is now
available. Burns highlights several interesting research initiatives
currently underway in Japan and gives status reports for the current
commercial vendors of rapid prototyping equipment.

**3D Systems says it will license Imageware's rapid prototyping tools
and create a new 3D toolkit for SLA users. The toolkit will include the
ability to create STL files of molds from part STL files.

**Electro Optical Systems (EOS) is granted two United States patents

**Helisys has its first Japanese patent

**Calls for papers
-Seventh International Conference on Rapid Prototyping: March 31 -
April 3, 1997 in San Francisco
-Sixth European Conference on Rapid Prototyping: July 1-3, 1997 in
Nottingham England
-SME Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing: April 22-14, 1997 in
Dearborn, Michigan

**Business news
-3D Systems will purchase Keltool, Inc.
-Soligen appoints new national sales manager
-Helisys names new vp of marketing

**Calendar of events
