We installed an Actua about six weeks ago. The field service person
spent the morning doing the install, and since then it has run great.
Preparing a part takes under 2 minutes. The Actua build about four
times faster on average than our SLA-250, but this depends on geometry,
system loading, parameters, etc. Supports are added automatically, and
they brush off easily.
Regarding your question about applications:
Obviously fast concept modeling is one, since the Actua is designed
primarily to serve in that role. Surface quality is excellent, except
for the down facing surface where the supports were. Feature definition
is even better than SLA in some cases. We've built verticle walls as
thin as 0.004". Layer thickness is hard wired at 0.0039" in z. We've
found Actua parts to be about 3-5 thou undersized. By applying a slight
scale factor we've getting within 3 thou generally. This is pretty good
in our view.
The first-generation material that is available is mostly paraffin wax.
The parts are ideal for investment casting. According to the foundries
we are in touch with, burnout parameters do not have to be modified at
all.

When our Camattini ProtoMix system installs in a couple of weeks, Actua
will be used to make patterns for RTV tooling.
