    Scientific Measurement Systems Appoints Dr. Michael Ervin President
    and CEO

    AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific Measurement
Systems, Inc.
    (OTC Bulletin Board: SCMS) (SMS)
    announced today that Dr. Michael Ervin, has been appointed President
and CEO
    effective September 1, 1997. Dr. Ervin
    replaces Larry Secrest who will remain Chairman of the Board of
Scientific
    Measurement Systems, Inc.

    Dr. Ervin comes to SMS from DTM Corporation where he was Vice
President of
    Engineering, Development and
    Manufacturing. DTM is a publicly traded Nasdaq firm that is a leader
in the rapid
    prototyping industry. Prior to joining DTM,
    Dr. Ervin was Vice President for the Imaging Systems and Medical
Products Sectors
    of Du Pont de Nemours.

    Chairman Secrest noted that SMS hopes to capitalize on technology
being developed
    through the Company's Ultrafast CT
    consortium partly funded under the Advanced Technology Program of
the National
    Institute of Standards and Technology.
    Other consortium members are GM, GE, and EG&G.
