PANEL REPORT DETERMINES WORLDWIDE LEADERS IN RAPID PROTOTYPING
        DEARBORN, Mich. -- October 21, 1997 -- The United States leads the
world in most aspects of rapid prototyping, but Japan and Europe are
quickly closing the gap, states the WTEC Panel Report on Rapid
Prototyping in Europe and Japan, Volume I.
        Encouraged by RPA/SME, the U.S. National Science Foundation and other
government agencies initiated a study administered by the Japanese
Technology Evaluation Center/World Technology Evaluation Center (WTEC)
to assess the capabilities of Japan and selected European countries in
developing and implementing layered manufacturing technologies (rapid
prototyping). The report is the result of that study.
        This 160-page, soft-cover report has numerous charts, figures and
tables and features an overview of the RP process; an historical
perspective of the processes; the needs, goals and objectives for rapid
prototyping; CAD and interfaces; machine design; metalcasting; tooling;
and medical applications.
        The publication states that technical innovations in the next few years
are likely to dominate RP for more than a decade and the combination of
government programs and industrial entrepreneurship will determine who
will lead in the future.
