Dear Christian,
You're thoughts are "out there," but they're not science fiction:
(1) Sun has a neat virtual reality demo wherein you wear shutter glasses to make images on the
computer screen appear to be three dimensional. In this demo you can turn virtual parts on a
virtual lathe.
(2) MIT's Artificial Intelligence Lab has a demo wherein you squash a slab of virtual clay
to a desired shape and then harden it. The "feel" of the clay (before and after hardening) is
transmitted to the tip of the user's index finger through a three-axis haptic system resembling a
tiny robot arm.
Both demos are pretty cool.
