You may want to check out some Canadian efforts in that area:

CAD Systems, an independent Canadian magazine had a special report on
Rapid Prototyping.
In part III you can find an article about research efforts done by
Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Institute (part of National
Research Council Canada).
Read about it at http://www.cadsystems.com/profiles/9711f04.html

IMTI has developed novel techniques for producing functional moulds,
dies and other production tools, notably EDM electrodes and ECM
cathodes, using a process which NRC has patented in the USA.
For more details about IMTI's efforts in that field check out
http://www.nrc.ca/imti/fff_e.html

Kind regards,
Vesna
