I would like to propose the following :

the way to go from physical to numerical model

We need :
- sensor (with support structure, numerical or manual) and softwares for
filtering,adjustments, mapping,etc... (pixels, points, curves, polylines,
etc...)
- then : 3D modelling software (surface, volume, feature, etc...)
- or : direct STL or ISO NC files for part manufacturing (very often you
have to make offset of the surfaces you have scanned before STL generation.
It depends on the case study. But for ISO NC files, it could be direct from
scan to file generation. Some additionnal functions shoulb applied, like
die lines modelling (using ruled surfaces for example obtained from point
extention).

An integrated software should do all these functions (like surfacer, CATIA
Cloud, STRIM 100 RDS, ProScanTools, etc...).

You need to define very carefully scanning strategies and the information
you choose to scan in order to be efficient for 3D modelling. Very often,
you have to scan some basic elements for general features modelling and
high density point clouds for details definition or ergonomic or
aerodynamic shapes definition.

I think that reverse engineering should be the first step for 3D copy of an
object in a futurist machine : you put your object at the entrance of the
machine and you obtain a 3D physical copy of your object at the exit of the
machine. We have already made such a process, but time and steps are a bit
long (a few hours) and not yet compatible with the patience you should have
waiting for your copy (like for paper copy, just a few seconds...)
