Peter:

We are Catia users and have had similar problems (overlapping edges and bad
geometry) using Catia's IGES converter. We've been using an IGES converter
from Compunix and it's worked extremely well - no more complaints of
"furball" models from our vendors. It's kind of pricey at $5,500 for a
single-user license for the bidirectional converter (single direction,
Catia-to-IGES is $3,600, and IGES-to-Catia is $2,600 for single-user) but
we've had no problems so far. You can find them at www.compunix-usa.com
You'll have to ask about an SGI version (we're running IBM RS6000's)
but I'm sure they'll have something (Hans Zink is a good contact).

You might also try a search using "Catia" or "Catia Operators Exchange" or
"COE" as subjects. I tried this and came up with several Catia user groups.

Good Luck,
