UNIGRAPHICS SOLUTIONS INTRODUCES FIRST COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE 5-AXIS

                  NURBS-Based Tool Path Cam Software
                           (PR Newswire; 09/11/98)

CHICAGO, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Unigraphics Solutions Inc. (NYSE: UGS)
today introduced 5-Axis NURBS-Based Tool Path Software -- a dramatic step
forward in computer aided manufacturing (CAM) functionality, performance
and productivity for the high-end manufacturing marketplace. 5-Axis NURBS
will be unveiled and demonstrated this week at the IMTS Trade Show, being
held at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Unigraphics Solutions, a recognized leader in the CAD/CAM/CAE market,
developed the 5-Axis NURBS-based tool path to enhance its machining product
offerings and allow companies to gain greater productivity. NURBS-based
tool paths (3-Axis), which were introduced into Unigraphics software last
year, assist in generating more speed, higher accuracy and increased
productivity achievable during high speed machining processes. Unigraphics
CAM software delivers the first commercially available support for 5-Axis
NURBS-Based Tool Paths, which was developed with close collaboration from
Makino and GE/Fanuc. Unigraphics software supports the new 5-Axis NURBS
tool path format found in 5-Axis Makino machine tools with the Fanuc
controllers.

"The manufacturing industry is on the cusp of another paradigm shift with
the availability of 5-Axis NURBS-based machining capabilities," said Jeff
Wallace, Makino CAD/CAM application engineer. "With well thought out
execution of 3- Axis NURBS implementation and now, the 5-Axis NURBS
implementation, Unigraphics Solutions is continuing to show its commitment
to the manufacturing industry and high speed machining technology."

As high speed machining requires high quality surface finishes and rapid
speed, Unigraphics Solutions has responded with a software solution
delivering unparalleled surface quality and record breaking speed.
Additionally, similar requirements have been identified in the aerospace
industry, where 5-Axis machining is predominantly utilized.

Unigraphics CAM now will provides the ability to generate 5-Axis spline
data, which directly controls tool path direction and tool axis movement.
The new spline tool path allows for the machining of complex parts at
greater speeds, surface finishes with "mirror like" qualities and increased
accuracy. Additionally, the spline tool produces substantially smaller tool
paths compared to traditional methods. NURBS-based tool paths are now an
integral part of Unigraphics Solutions' CAM software offering.
