I saw the message from Dan Davis from PROTON Rapid Prototyping Center
regarding the Ciba 5220 SLA 500 resin where he's experienced some brittleness
issues. I would like to share Delphi's experience with Dupont's new SOMOS 8100
epoxy resin (also for the SLA 500). We have been extremely happy with this
resin (we switched from SL 5180) and the support Dupont has given us. We are
building clean flexible parts with properties similar to polypropylene. Many
applications have benefited from this resin including the housing/cover
assemblies we build that must snap together. It is excellent for snap fit
applications. Build times are much faster than SL 5180 at less than half the
laser power (130mW), and support removal is made easier with supports tearing
off effortlessly by hand. Accuracy and surface finish have not been an issue.
Our customer demand for this resin has grown to such a large extent that we are
switching one of our SLA 250 machines to SOMOS 8110.
