I believe the people at Virginia Tech were successful in building adaptively
sliced models on an FDM. Their slices were of different thickness. If you
access their server, you should search for a Masters Thesis written by
Justin Tyberg, and published earlier this year, which describes both
software methods and implementation and testing with the FDM, if my memory
still works.
