Matt,

If enough of the people doing this kind of menial assembly of
mass-produced components get it in their heads that they can design better components
and then want to produce those components at home themselves, then you've
got the makings of the demand for the home fabricator, or the personal
factory, as a few of us have called it. Of course, before that, a software
company will have to come up with something like Pro-E for the home (I
joked a recent IDSA conference that it would be called Home-E, which is
probably funny only to an American audience) and they would have to learn to use
it and the workstation that runs it. Or, you could have some clever
people designing the products and the home product assemblers could download
the designs from over the Internet into their Home Fabricator/Personal
Factory and then assemble the parts. Or, it could come about in some other way
I can't think of. We've got billions of minds on the planet and they don't
all think the same way as I do.
