Many inventors and executives do not understand the subtleties of the
patenting and licensing processes and associated terminology, and
most patent attorneys cannot take the time to explain the nuances of
patent law. This course addresses these issues and presents a
step-by-step approach to documenting and protecting ideas and
inventions. It provides information on how to obtain a patent and
license
a product, and covers the terminology of patenting and licensing, as
well as the subtleties of the patenting process. It also allows for more
efficient and effective communication with patent counsel.
The course explains what can happen after the patent is issued, and
offers the necessary information to make better decisions at an early
stage to avoid mistakes that may prove costly later. Lectures explain
how the short and long-term savings to an organization whose engineers
and administrative staff are knowledgeable in the patenting/licensing
areas can be substantial. Recognizing that what you don't know can
hurt you, the course removes the mystery from patenting and licensing
and describes what goes on at each stage of the process. Topics range
from mechanical, electrical, and chemical patents to the nascent areas
of software and biotechnology patents.
The course consists of structured presentations, multiple workshops,
and question-and-answer sessions. The nature of patents, the subtleties
of patent claims, patent interference, and patent infringement are all
explained. Several case histories are presented, thus providing
participants with a hands-on, nuts-and-bolts appreciation for the
diverse
aspects of the patenting and licensing processes. Participants also
have the opportunity to interact and share experiences in an informal
setting.
