The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were
     born in 1980.

They do not have a smallpox vaccination scar on their arm.

They probably have never seen a polio victim nor even know what the
     effects of the disease are.

Fewer of them have birth defects.

They can have laser eye surgery as an option to glasses.

They will, on an average, live longer than their parents.

They can make a phone call across continents as easily as calling
     across town.

Most of them know how to apply CPR or the Heimlich maneuver to save a
     life.

They have always had seatbelts in their cars, and are less likely to
know what it's like to go through a windshield.

They can't comprehend that women or blacks were not always allowed to
     vote.

History teaches them that protest CAN end a war.

They have never heard an air raid siren test.

(In most cities, at least) they have never had to cancel outdoor
activities because of polluted air, and will probably never see a
     river catch fire.

They did not have to experience "Disco"
