The only thing I am wondering about is that you say "ProE ist standard".
What about all the others CADs ?
>From my point of view, STEP AP214 or Parasolids or ACIS is standard.

Or simply: "a 3D volume descrition" (like STL, as you wite later).

You'll get no flames from me on this, with the complexity of parts and the
production time schedules involved, providing a 3D model is the reality of
today's business. Sooner or later a 3D model will be required and it's
better to create one first rather than later (especially to perform virtual
prototyping which may even eliminate the need to rapid prototype a physical
model in the first place).
