Michael,
I would disagree to a certain extent. I know building architects in town
(doing mostly office complexes casinos etc etc) that would spend 50K on hand
crafted models for clients but somehow wouldnt want to use RP - probably
more tradition than anything else. I tried selling them the concept but to
no avail.

Dear Franna Gillespie,

To my knowledge, and I've done quite a bit of research here, architects
would not afford expensive rp models. Occaisionally, on large public
projects, a discrete entity, such as a cupola, will be made with RP and
combined with traditional models. By and large, architects are creating
2D documents from AUto CAD, lots of plan section and elevations and not
as many 3D models. When 3D models are made they are usually to create
walk through animations for sales. Not, except in rare cases, to create
models. Architecture is a discipline rooted in tradition.

Having said that, there are of course architects who have used RP to
propose designs and plans. Notably, Frank Gehry. BUt, typically, RP is
to expensive to make models with. (Architects also like to work small
models themselves.)

best,
