David,
I appreciate your comments but many of the UK Universities have done a very
good job in disseminating this technology to industry. Without this
University effort the RP industry in the UK would not be in the strong
position it is in generally. Were you not involved in this at Coventry
University?
I also understand the frustration that bureaus have by being undercut by
"University bureaus". I lay the blame here with the UK Department of Trade
and Industry. Amongst others, I tried to get them to coordinate all this
but I failed and so people in Universities went for what they could get and
now we have a bit of chaos.
As someone who set up a University centre at the University of Nottingham I
can see both points of view. I have now come to realise that Universities
should not be doing bureau work but concentrating on research, teaching and
training.

There is obviously some short term pain (e.g. Formation) but the
Universities will be seen at have had an overall positive effect.

Dear David,

further to your "advert" to the rp-ml members, perhaps you can be more
forthcoming about the processes and technologies that the RPM Centre uses
as your website seems to lack much substance on this matter. What
technologies do you have in-house? Are you an RP bureau or are you a
consultancy? Are you supported by a University or academic organisation via
EU funding or are you a fully independent commercially financed company?

Sorry to ask so many questions about your operation but in the West
Midlands it seems that every two-bit educational establishment is buying RP
equipment and setting up a commercial bureau, with a handful of untrained
and inexperienced staff.

As the director of a small independent self financed RP bureau I cannot
see that the use of EU money in this way benefits anyone in the long term,
customers or bureaux. This issue has yet to be resolved in any meaningful
way and I am sure its consequences will be felt by everyone in RP in the
near future.

Yours

Oliver Cole
