Hi Michelle,
1.) The extensions ".tif" and ".bmp" designate digital image (bit
map) formats.
These file formats represent color/intensity values on
a pixel by pixel bases so that your computer/printer/outputdevice
can display 2d images.
TIF (actually TIFF) stands for Tagged Image File (Format) and is
a widely used and very robust image file format.
BMP is primarily a PC format but seems to be used a little
more frequently now than it used to be.
2.) The extension ".dxf" designates an Autodesk (AutoCAD) format that
was originally designed to contain 2d CAD data but was extended
a while back to include 3d surface information.
3.) TIF and BMP files (or any 2d image for that matter) can be used by
a designer/engineer as a modeling aid when creating 3d geometry
that might be implied in the image. But these files in and of
themselves do not contain anything that would provide useful data
for rp systems.
The DXF files (if they actually contain 3d information) can be
read by just about any 3d modeling program can be converted
into whatever output format you wish . . . STL being one of
them.
