Dear List,

we encountered the problem of STL restrictions in 1996, because we developed
software for RP technology planning. Here we needed information about
requirements that apply to the workpiece as well as geometry information.

Therefore we operated on STEP data. Additionally we designed a new format
called RPDF (RP Data Format), which contains detailed layer and technology
information. But I am not shure whether this is the best solution of the
problem.

Maybe in some years all our systems operate on STEP data. This is most
desirable.
But for the moment we think, a suitable solution for the industry could be
something like STL+, an expanded format derived from STL. It could contain
facetted surfaces, groups of these, and further information attached to
these groups. I assume that even layer thickness or technological hints
could be added.

What do you think about STL+?
