New event

Dear RP friends,

There's a very interesting program being lined up that people on this
list ought to take a look at. It's the Congress on the Future of Engineering
Software (COFES) being organized by CAD gurus Joel Orr, Brad Holtz, and Evan
Yares. It is the next step in a process that started with a summit meeting
of 64 top leaders in CAD and engineering software in Chicago last year. That
meeting identified nine key issues for bringing the tools of engineering
into the 21st century:
        -- User interface
        -- Web implications
        -- Interoperability
        -- Barriers to implementation
        -- Knowledge capture
        -- The channel
        -- A "dream machine"
-- Failure of "The Grand Unification Theory of CAD"

In the meantime, the organizers of COFES have realized that most of
these issues in today's environment revolve around the Internet and have
planned for a heavy emphasis on the use of the Internet for fast, efficient,
and effective execution of engineering projects.

Check out the Web site for the event: http://www.cofes.com. Also, for
the story of what was learned at the summit and how it feeds into COFES, see
the article "The Future of Engineering Software" in Computer Graphics World,
February 2000. (To see it on the Web, got to www.CGW.com, click on the
button on the left for Archives, do a date search for February 2000, and
then scan or search the listing for the title, "The Future of Engineering
Software.")
