Dear Mr. Page:

There's probably more information out there on this than you can shake a
stick at. A lot depends on the specifics of your application and desired
results. Since I am in perfect ignorance of those, here are some general
starting points:

1. Do an engineering index literature search for key words, compounds and the
application. Use booleans to narrow the hits.

2. Do a good card catalog library search for the same kind of things. It's
likely that a large fraction of the antecedant technology is mature enough to
be covered. Compounds like PVA are covered thoroughly in all chemical and
application detail in multiple volumes extending over 30 years or more.
Don't ignore simple references like the Encyclopedia of Polymer Science that
may have articles that will give you an overview and pointed references.

3. Do a US patent search for the applications and compounds. A lot of what
you'll turn up that's recent won't be covered elsewhere.

4. Search the chemical literature using the Chem Abstracts. Leave this 'til
last because generally you'll turn up about 10X as much stuff than with the
more pointed engineering application search, and a lot of it will be at the
dread molecular level.

Most of this work can be done on the web, and you'll need physical access to
a university library for the books.

With the breadth of this subject, if you don't limit your search carefully,
we may never hear from you again.

Have fun,
Ed
