Hello All,
  There is an article in the September Issue of CADence Magazine called
"Desktop Digitizing". The article covers concepts from scanners and
digitizers to software used to make 3D files of solids that were scanned. It
covers about 8 different manufacturers of hardware as well as 5 different
software companies. It's a good summary of the current methods used for
reverse engineering.
