Jim,
It's done by a modified version of freeze casting. In this case the
investment slurry is alcohol based and refrigerated to avoid melting. The
invested ice pattern is then freeze dried (below zero centigrade) to impart
rigidity to the shell and the ice melts out at room temperature afterwards.
