Actually, the original computer mouse (ca. mid-1960s) had a companion
device that was a one-handed (5-key) chordic keyboard for entering text. A
couple of people in the world still know how to use it. For better or worse,
the QWERTY keyboard was too well established to be supplanted then.
Speech recognition, gesture recognition, and various other more natural
interface technologies may eventually replace the QWERTY (actually, that's kind
of fun to type), but established technologies die hard.
