For every year since 1996, the SCANNING conference gathered in Paris
with an audience of reverse engineering specialists. Furthermore, and
for the past 2 years, it featured live English translators and shifted
its focus from 3D Scanning to Human Modeling. Next year, we are
developing an extension dealing specifically with the needs of 3D
Medical Modeling.
The Technical Committee consists of Laura Dekker,(3D Q in UK) for Human
Modeling, Sabine Roth Koch (Fraunhofer Stuttgart) , Pascal
Lefebvre-Albaret (TechnoDigite France) and Yannick Loisance
(Multistation) for Numerisation 3D and Dr. Farid Taha (France) for 3D
Medical Modeling.
SCANNING 3D could be a valuable asset in the development of the
Reverse engineering benchmark project. The proceedings of the conferences
could serve as a basis for an annual review.

I believe this thread began with a reverse engineering bnchmark in mind, as
the subject line suggests. However, the idea of doing an RP benchmark is
also interesting. As an independent body, the Global Alliance of Rapid
Prototyping Associations (GARPA) may be interested in doing the work.
Anyone interested in sponsoring the costs associated with it?
As a sidenote, GARPA's Global Summit 2002 was held on August 18 in Beijing,
China. Representatives from Australia, Germany, Finland, Hong Kong, Japan,
mainland China, South Africa, UK, and the USA were present. The meeting,
hosted by Professor Yongnian Yan of Tsinghua University, was very
productive. A summary of the meeting will be available at www.garpa.org as
soon as possible.

Dick Aubin did the IMS benchmark which looked at all systems that were
current at the time of the study. However the raw data was only available
to the membership. If anyone wants to do a repeat study such as GARPA I
believe the time has come that such a study would benefit the industry
greatly. While the IMS study was volunteer and many of the parts were
"handmade" to benefit the company the results I knew about was surprising.
