PhD Studentship
We have an immediate vacancy for a full time PhD student to join the
internationally recognised Rapid Manufacturing Research Group in the Wolfson
School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering, Loughborough University,
UK.
The studentship covers tuition fees and provides a stipend for three years
ca £12,000 pa. Applications from UK & EU citizens are especially encouraged.
The Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at
Loughborough University is one of the largest and most successful
engineering schools in the UK. The work performed by the Rapid
Manufacturing Research Group is based around a family of technologies
collectively known as Rapid Prototyping. All Rapid Prototyping processes
work by adding layers of material and either bonding or fusing them
together, often with the aid of a laser. These techniques are used to create
3D geometries directly from 3D CAD models with no need for tooling. A great
emphasis of the group is placed on researching the use of these
manufacturing technologies to directly produce end-use products A great
advantage of the processes are that they allow much greater freedom in
product design and less reliance on high production numbers required for
economic production.
The area of study will focus on the medical application of additive
manufacturing technologies. Topics may include: design, production
technologies, materials & application. Some current areas of investigation

are welcomed.
Applicants with a good understanding of
design/manufacturing/materials/healthcare and a desire to conduct PhD study
in a strong research environment are encouraged to apply. A good degree or
equivalent experience is essential.
