Cristina,

   I'm not sure if your projects goal is to write software or just find a
solution. Rhino3D will import a stl and has a function which will produce
sections. Far from open source but if the end result is the goal it
shouldn't be too difficult to write a script to generate the slices and
then export them for your visual basic application.

assignment descriptions, sometimes to the chagrin of the masters.
