The basic patent has run out. Basic patents on other low-cost
technologies will run out soon, as well - or might not even be in effect.
 
Also, although it's not true in the US, in many countries patents don't
cover do-it-yourself situations. In other words, you can make a patented
invention for your own personal use as long as you don't sell it.
