Yes, the article has some errors, but the main fact about patents remains
true and surely in a few years SLA and SLS machines and materials prices
will go down. They will still probably be industrial grade machines as SLA
and SLS is not so easy DIY stuff as FDM is, and will have more reasonable
prices. Right now Chinese SLA and SLS machines are costing 1/2 or 1/3 the
price of 3DSYS or Strata machines and do not force clients to purchase
proprietary materials.

Very good points, Terry. I just read it very quickly I guess and focused on
the patent expiration part. Still, many of the patents have already expired
or will very soon. Say hello to the Chinese! Pretty soon Walmart will be
selling these (and the consumables too).

It includes many errors. The author states that laser sintering is the
lowest-cost 3D printing technology. That's certainly not the case, nor does
Formlabs sell a desktop laser-sintering machine. Charles Hull founded 3D
Systems, not Stratasys. Scott and Lisa Crump were the founders of Stratasys.
The final laser sintering patent (5,639,070) at the University of Texas at
Austin expires in June 2014.
