NCMS is sponsoring a consortium for RSP under development at Idaho Nat Eng
and Env (INEEL) Lab. The rapid solidification process (RSP) uses a hot gas
to atomize a liquid metal alloy in a special spray gun. The sprayed liquid
quickly builds up on a tooling pattern to a depth of several inches,
replicating the shape and surface detail with little to no need for further
polishing. This process could turn out a tool in a week.... According to
this article in "Technology Business" the process is capable of producing
tooling at the rate of one ton per hour and will accommodate just about any
