Unigraphics Solutions Gains Complementary Technology;
Newly Formed EDS Subsidiary Now Provides Full End-To-End CAD/CAM
Capabilities Leveraging Windows Interoperability
ST. LOUIS, March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- EDS today announced the completion of
the acquisition of Intergraph's Mechanical CAD/CAM business and its product,
Solid Edge. The organization will become part of Unigraphics Solutions Inc.,
an EDS subsidiary. The transfer of certain non-U.S. employees and assets of
the business is expected to occur later this month pending local government
approvals. Solid Edge in combination with Unigraphics, Parasolid and IMAN now
comprises the four principal product lines of Unigraphics Solutions.
"Large numbers of 2D CAD users are switching to Windows-based 3D solid-
modeling systems like Solid Edge," said John Mazzola, CEO and president of
Unigraphics Solutions. "The acquisition of Intergraph Mechanical provides our
company with a world-class, mid range CAD/CAM system, Solid Edge, which
leverages Windows technology. We also believe the combination of the software
development expertise of both companies will greatly benefit Unigraphics
Solutions and its customers. The ability to deliver end-to-end software
functionality from Windows-based 3D through high end CAD/CAM systems continues
our commitment to industry leadership."
Solid Edge provides mechanical assembly design and drafting combining
production proven solid modeling and unparalleled ease-of-use at an affordable
price. With fully integrated assembly modeling, part modeling, sheet metal
drafting environments, Solid Edge offers a powerful 2D-to-3D design system
rivals traditional high-end modeling systems and augments the limited
functionality of standalone 2D CAD. The use of Unigraphics Solutions'
Parasolid product as a data pipeline between Solid Edge and Unigraphics will
enable data exchange across any enterprise.
Acquisition of the Solid Edge product is currently estimated to result in
an in-process R&D write off by EDS of approximately $42 million or 40 percent
of the purchase price.
