The offical specification for the DICOM standard can be found at

Just to warn you, the standard is incredibly complex and may take a long
time to get a robust DICOM reader working from scratch. There are several
source code implementations that can be used to read DICOM files...some of
these can be found at

Also, check out comp.protocols.dicom for more help,

good luck,

Subject: Question : DICOM (CT file formation)

    Hello all.

I am working with a software, which is dealing with CT data. Now, our
software can read
GE genesis file format. but I wish that our software can read DICOM
Is there anyone give me a detailed specification of the data structure
the DICOM file ?
(If possible) I prefer an example source files.
