Seeking intelligent product development - an integrator environment based

  Abstract: Rapid Prototyping (RP) is an emerging technology with different
applications in the cycle of product and process development used during
the conceptual and specification phases. To support it,
  the usage of a Data Base Management System (DBMS) and an Expert Systems
(ES) are important to manage the data, support the identification of errors
and check product conformance and production
  viability during this cycle, seeking intelligent product development. The
underlying concept of RP and ES is very straight forward, but still exists
a major problem that concerns the integration in the
  CAD/CAM environment. CAD data can have a variety of formats depending on
the model used in the CAD system, as well as on ES' data and knowledge
structure, that usually relies on the expert system
  shell's where it was developed. To support and speed up the integration
process of these tools in a manufacturing environment, is essential to have
an integrator environment where a standard is adopted for
  the data and knowledge exchange process, providing the software
applications with a neutral format interface, becoming these tools open and
standard compliant, ready to be used in any other standard
  environment. UNINOVA, in the scope of European and National projects,
developed a STEP-based Platform for Integration of applications (SIP) to
support and aid the software integration in industrial
  environments using the standard ISO10303-STEP, already used in different
industrial domains. This paper addresses the integration aspects using STEP
within industrial environments from the technical point
  of view, and proposes an architecture and a toolkit for the integrator
environment, highlighting the implementation efforts to required to have RP
technology, ES and DBMS focused towards a STEP-based

  Abstract: From the design through scheduling to dispatch, knowledge
engineering (KE) is everywhere. Some of the most impressive productivity

  Abstract: IntelliSense reports on a new computer-aided design software
system for rapid prototype development of microelectromechanical systems.
This system, called IntelliCAD, is

Expert system-based selection of the preferred direction of build for rapid
prototyping processes

  Abstract: Current commercial rapid prototyping technologies are based on
a layered additive process to build parts. The layer-based process results
in a stairstepping effect, which can be
  apparent on curved and sloped surfaces. The selection of the build
orientation, whether based on experience, trial and error, or not even
considered, is one critical factor that affects the quality of
  the surface finish. Furthermore, it influences other important aspects,
such as the build time and the amount of support structure needed. The
authors propose an expert system tool that
  considers the various parameters that affect the production of the
prototype and interacts with the user to recommend the best direction to
build. The recommendation is based both on the user's
  input and on a decision matrix based on the result of interviews with
experts, which is implemented within the expert system. If an optimal
orientation is not possible, the tool helps the user to
  select an acceptable build direction. The expert system can also draw
attention to issues such as trapped volumes, which can be detrimental to
the build process. It helps to reduce the design
  time, to automate the build process and to minimize the cost of the
prototype. The results of this work form a base for ongoing research to
complete a tool that considers all major issues for a

  Abstract: Introduces the need for engineering knowledge management tools
for storing past solutions and expert knowledge for the design of automatic
precision machinery. The design of this
  type of machine, which is heavily utilized in modern manufacturing
industry, is very complex, time-consuming and potentially expensive.
Describes the design and functionality of a novel
  computer aided rapid prototyping tool named Scheme-builder. The design is
traced from its philosophical origins in the `Theory of domains' and how
this can be used by the designer with the aid

  Abstract: A prototype expert system is described for concurrent design
and analysis of composite structures. This system integrates symbolic,
numerical and knowledge-based tools in an
  object-oriented programming environment for design synthesis, evaluation
and modification. The system determines structural behavior utilizing a
combination of analytical and numerical tools.
  Design modifications and structural optimization are performed using
heuristic and experientially derived knowledge bases. The different
domain-specific programs and commercial packages
  utilized by the system are integrated using a genetic interfacing
mechanism. The utility of the system is demonstrated by means of a design
case study for a typical aircraft or rotorcraft structural
