Why not simply buy a good digital camcorder?

The medium-good range models all have built-in A-D converters. Simply
cable up your old player (VCR, stereo, etc.), and record on the digital
camcorder. Then do a Firewire transfer to your computer. If you have a new
Mac with iMovie, iTunes, and iDVD bundled, you need no other software or
hardware. On the PC side, get a Firewire card and use Microsoft's Movie
maker or buy other software.

I do this (on Mac) all the time.
WARNING: TV and studio editors get paid well for a reason. This will suck
more time than you may believe, because you will want it "just right". ;)

Cheers, and there goes your weekend...,

Doug, this device may do that, a little ambiguous about music inputs...we
helped prototype it! Regards, Bob Olsen, Protogenic

The external HP DVD movie writer dc3000 with built-in analog video capture
lets you quickly and easily transfer home video directly from tape (via
camcorder or VCR) to DVD. The included suite of software lets you edit
video, photos, music, and data applications, plus write and read CD-R and
CD-RW discs as well as DVD+R/+RW.

Actually, I'm also interested in this question, as well as how to get
old 8 mm home movies converted to digital files as well.

Please copy me on responses to Doug and also let me know about movies
if you know.
