Tough question to answer. Model Making is such a diverse trade. What some people feel important in one shop may have no value in another shop. What's your definition of generic skills? In this trade you don't need a machining background to be considered a modelmaker. You might want to post this on the (APMM) Association of Professional Model Makers message board at

Subject: modelmaker question
If there are two modelmakers one with generic skills and the other with CNC
skills, what should each be paid? How valuable are additional skills?
